What performance marketing means

Every agency says it is results driven. Performance marketing means something specific: the work is judged on bookings and sales, and the numbers are visible to the client.

Performance marketing is advertising that is planned, run and judged on measurable business results: bookings, enrolments, consultations, sales. It usually runs on platforms that track actions, such as Meta, Google and TikTok, and it changes budget and creative based on what those results show. Reach and impressions are inputs. The output is customers.

What does performance marketing include?

  • Paid social: Facebook, Instagram and TikTok ads.
  • Paid search: Google Ads and Bing.
  • Landing pages built to convert the traffic those ads send.
  • Tracking that connects each ad to the booking or sale it produced.
  • Follow up: email, SMS, Zalo or messaging that turns enquiries into customers.
  • Continuous testing of creative, audiences and offers.

How is performance marketing measured?

MetricWhat it tells you
Cost per lead or enquiryHow efficiently ads produce interest
Cost per booking, enrolment or saleWhat a customer actually costs
Return on ad spendRevenue earned for each dollar of advertising
Customer lifetime valueWhat a customer is worth over time, which sets what you can afford

The metric that matters depends on the business. A tennis academy cares about cost per enrolment. A clinic cares about consultations booked and treatments accepted. A beauty brand cares about return on ad spend and repeat purchase.

How does it differ from brand marketing?

Brand marketing builds familiarity over the long term and is measured loosely. Performance marketing asks for an action now and is measured precisely. They work best together: a brand people recognise converts better when the performance ad arrives. For a small business, performance marketing usually comes first because it pays for itself sooner.

What should you expect from a performance marketing agency?

  1. Agreement on the one number that defines success, before any money is spent.
  2. Access to your own ad accounts and data.
  3. Regular reporting on that number, not on clicks and impressions.
  4. A clear testing plan: what is being tested, and how winners and losers will be decided.
  5. Honest answers when something is not working.

We run performance marketing for tennis academies, clinics and consumer brands in Australia and Vietnam. Results on the site are measured the same way: 300+ enrolments for Sydney Tennis Academy, an indoor venue taken from 30% to 80% booked, a perfume brand built to $25,000 a month at 6x return on ad spend.
