Your pixel is missing sales
If Meta cannot see a sale, it cannot find more people like the buyer. Missing tracking makes the ads look worse and perform worse at the same time.
The Meta pixel runs in the customer's browser, and browser privacy features, ad blockers and Apple's App Tracking Transparency stop it from seeing some purchases, bookings and leads. The Conversions API sends the same events from your website's server or booking system directly to Meta. Running both, with events deduplicated, gives Meta a far more complete picture, which improves both reporting and ad delivery.
Why does missing tracking hurt the ads themselves?
Meta's delivery system learns from conversions. It looks at who booked or bought and finds more people like them. When a share of conversions goes unreported, the system learns from less data and optimises towards a distorted picture of your customer. Reporting also undercounts results, so campaigns that work can look like they do not.
What does the Conversions API do?
It sends conversion events from your server to Meta, so they do not depend on the customer's browser. A purchase, a booking confirmation or a lead form submission is reported even if the browser blocked the pixel. Each event carries an identifier so Meta can match it to the same event from the pixel and count it once.
Which businesses need it most?
| Business | Event that matters | Common gap |
|---|---|---|
| E-commerce brands | Purchase, with value | Purchases on iPhones and in privacy focused browsers |
| Clinics | Consultation booked | Bookings made through a third party booking system |
| Tennis academies | Trial or enrolment | Sign ups that finish in a separate booking platform |
| Service businesses | Lead submitted | Phone calls and messages that never touch the website |
How do you check if your tracking is working?
- Compare purchases or bookings in Meta Events Manager with the real numbers in your store or booking system for the same week.
- Check the Event Match Quality score for your main event in Events Manager.
- Confirm the main event fires once per conversion, not twice and not zero times.
- Check that conversions completed in third party booking tools are reported at all.
A large gap between Meta's count and the real count means the ads are optimising on partial data. Closing it is often the quickest improvement available to an account, because it needs no new creative and no extra budget.
